4k Blu ray Player From Panasonic

We’ve been preparing you for 4k from its early infancy, and we mentioned that a 4k Blu ray player was on its way in our post of 2014/01/23. Here we are a little over a year and a half later, reporting on the release of a 4k Blu ray player from Panasonic. So what does a 4k Blu ray player play you ask?

Conducting a search on Amazon will lead you to a small assortment of titles by Sony that have the words, “mastered in 4k – Single-Disc Blu-ray + UltraViolet Digital Copy.” Stuff like Men In Black, Glory, Taxi Driver and Spider-Man 2, you can have now. They are priced anywhere from about $15 – $20 depending upon a title’s popularity.

A Sony entry player into the marketplace, the Sony FMPX10 4K Ultra HD Media Player, is listed on Amazon at $554.94. Compared to the Panasonic unit mentioned here, this is a steal. The Panasonic 4k Blu ray player is priced at around 400,000 yen (US$3,327).

Panasonic justifies the extra cost by providing the device with a 3TB hard disk drive onboard for recording Japanese terrestrial and satellite TV. (Even 3TB of SSD shouldn’t cost THAT much.)

This device is for the Japanese market and equipped for the kind of technology that Japan is aiming for, if it doesn’t exist already. It is usually the U.S. that is on the late show. However, I am looking for the Samsung entry into the marketplace that should hit some time in early 2016. It is the only player that actually speaks HDR (High Dynamic Range) ability. We like HDR for the way it makes images “pop” like preferring a plasma display to a LCD display, only even better.

The Blu-ray Disc Association finalized the “4K” Ultra HD Blu-ray specification in May, and in August the group said to expect product announcements before the holidays.

Panasonic will soon begin selling in Japan a Blu-ray Disc player compatible with 4K UltraHD discs, the first such player in the world.

UltraHD, also called 4K, has four times the resolution than conventional high definition and is being promoted hard by major consumer electronics companies as a reason for people to upgrade their TVs.
