Lumix DMC-CM1 Pocket-sized 4k

The Lumix DMC-CM1 is being touted as the “world’s best camera phone because of its size, high-resolution, premium lens, and 1-inch 20 megapixel imaging sensor. Essentially an Android smartphone with a Leica branded lens, the camera made its first appearance at this year’s Photokina exhibition in Germany.

So what does this camera have that the iPhone 6 doesn’t? Well for starters, how about a 1-inch sensor in a 4.7 inch body. According to ForbesLife:

“A 1-inch sensor is truly massive for a phone: larger than those found in many high-end compacts, it’s the same chip used in the company’s $900 Lumix DMC-FZ1000 super zoom camera and the same size as that found in Sony’s highly-regarded RX100 III”

The iPhone 6’s 1/3 inch sensor by comparison is said to have excellent results, but size still matters particularly when one makes the effort to create a shot with a shallow depth of field. The Leica lens is an f 2.8 28mm equivalent prime lens that protrudes from the body and has a rotating lens ring used to adjust functions of the camera. It also sports a dedicated shutter release button as well as a slider switch to change back and forth from camera to video modes. For someone wanting to take a picture with their smartphone, these buttons are welcome.

The Lumix DMC-CM1 camera phone is clearly for the casual smartphone user who wants to take better pictures on the fly without having to carry a separate camera. Because it has features that amateur and professional photographers understand how to use, it will appeal to the more serious hobbyist.

Here are some specs from NoFilmSchool’s website:

1-inch 20 Megapixel sensor
Leica DC Elmarit 10mm f/2.8 (28mm equivalent)
2.3GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 801 CPU
4K Video and Photos
Full Manual Control during Videos/Photos
4.7-inch 1080p Display
16GB Internal Storage
Micro SD card slot
Android 4.4 OS
2600 mAh battery
Availability: Launching in France and Germany first to test the market
Price: About $1,165 (900 Euros)

The Lumix DMC-CM1 is almost twice as thick as the iPhone 6 and runs on Android Kit Kat. I’m glad that the product isn’t available here in the States yet, because I would like to have one and I’m not ready yet. At a price of about $1,165, I have to trust that the phone functions as well as the camera does.
