Nonlinear Editing Software Round-Up

Nonlinear Editing Software Round-Up

Years back, I decided to personally invest in my education of nonlinear editors by choosing Avid Media Composer, the grandaddy of all nonlinear editing software as my software of choice. Now the playing field has become crowded with new contenders that sport some features that can make an Avid-based editor green with envy. These bells and whistles programmed into the code of the newer editors take nothing away from the steadfastness and design-ability built into “the Avid,” but for up and coming editors that mainly do short form, they are a relief from the learning curve that it takes to master a nonlinear editor as robust as Avid’s. Take a look at what has happened in this arena during 2014 alone, and it is mind-boggling. The prospects of DaVinci Resolve’s futureĀ  is enough to make one want to master it just to work with UHD files. Never before has an NLE been able to color grade to the extent that Resolve does. Indeed we live in exciting times for video and film.

A Round-Up of the Last Non-Linear Editor Updates

June proved to be a rich month for non-linear editor users. Adobe released their latest Creative Cloud update, Apple updated Final Cut Pro X, Motion, and Compressor, the public beta of DaVinci Resolve 11 was released, and the Mac beta of Lightworks finally appeared.

Adobe Creative Cloud

On June 17 Adobe released the second major update to Creative Cloud. For Premiere Pro this release adds a new masking feature for effects. You can now easily add an effect mask either using an Oval or a four-point polygon tool. A built-in tracking tool makes it possible to track a shape in the video with the mask.

Other improvements include the ability to apply color correction to a master clip, and support for ARRI AMIRA, Sony STtP, and Canon RAW files, and improved support for CinemaDNG formats. — Read more: A Round-Up of the Last Non-Linear Editor Updates | Filmmaker Magazine
