I was glad to meet Brian Fox, Director of Product Marketing for GenArts, Inc., who we spent some time with learning about some of the new features of GenArts Sapphire 9. GenArts Sapphire 9 is a robust plugin used by just about all major studios. The company has been around for over 20 years, and the Sapphire 9 plugin is a robust culmination of plugins developed over the years. This year featured some new additions that you will learn of by watching the above video.

One of the much appreciated effects is the one called Bokeh Lights. It does exactly what you think it does. It self-generates a defocused background of lights. No need to set up or search for some type of pin lights to place in the background when shooting. Just reach for the Sapphire 9 plugin and add beauty to your shot. As with most other Sapphire 9 effects, each one can be tailored to suit one’s personal purpose because everything is customizable. There is even the Effects Builder that gives one access to the Sapphire 9 elements allowing the creation of unique effects never seen.

As an editor, what I enjoy in particular is the Transition Builder feature within Sapphire 9. It makes the creation of unique effects simple along with the ability to alter the effect without having to go in and mess with keyframes.

If there has to be one drawback, I would say that to use the plugin on one’s computer system, it must be running a CUDA enabled GPU. FCPX users will not be able to take advantage of this fine plugin on their Mac Pro cylinder systems. (This isn’t a drawback for me.) It is known that CUDA outperforms Open CL. Open CL’s main advantage is that it is Open Source (free) coding. But here’s a list of where CUDA does work as well as where Open CL is used:

A bit of advice: If you are presented with a choice of CUDA or Open CL in your editing system, always choose CUDA. You will find that it has more enhancements and features because of nVidia support.
