More gizmos are appearing that can take away that “trash can” look of the new MacPro along with expanding its connectivity also enabling it to be installed in a professional rack or “RackPro” as it were. Maybe this should have been the marketing name for this new connectivity and capability expander, dubbed the Sonnet xMacPro Server, due in June but taking orders now.

As some know or have figured out, the MacPro lacks PCIe expandability on its own, but with a little help from Sonnet, one can have the ability to connect up to three (3) PCIe cards in this convenient 4-space, rack mount, Thunderbolt 2 enclosure that has its own 300w power supply. This is for when you want to use cards that need supplementary power such as the RED Rocket or Avid® Pro Tools|HDX.

The Sonnet xMac Pro Server dimensions are 19 x 16 x 7 in. (48.3 x 40.6 x 17.8 cm) and it weighs 32.5 lbs (14.7 kg). (I hope that is with the CPU already in place.)

Expand and Enclose Your New Mac Pro
at the Same Time

The new Mac Pro has become the object of desire, but a lustrous finish hides its true beauty—the massive power within. If you’re a pro user in the video or audio industries, the Mac Pro offers the power you need, but lacks the built-in expandability you count on. In order to achieve this engineering feat, Apple® designers stripped away components and space to a minimum, taking out PCIe slots and drive bays, and packed the remaining components into a small cylinder. Its compact size makes the new Mac Pro more transportable and rackable, but prevents onboard installation of PCIe expansion cards. In addition, the computer still requires an enclosure to make it road- or rack-ready and provide convenient cable management.
