Sony FDR-AX1 Is A Camcorder That Will Help Kickstart The 4K Democratization

Although the 4K RED ONE was released in 2007, Sony has been one of the prime movers behind the 4K push, launching digital cinema cameras like the F65 and F55 for high-end motion picture production. But with the exception of JVC’s GY-HMQ10 (List $5,500) and Sony’s own FS700R ($8,686.05 for camera body), most of your 4K camera packages are priced north of $10K. So how will the majority of us shoot 4K?

Announced back in September, the FDR-AX1 is Sony’s first “consumer” 4K video camcorder that is targeted towards indie shooters. With a retail price of only $4,499, which includes VEGAS PRO 12 and a 32GB XQD memory card, the AX1 should definitely hit a new and wider 4K demographic.

On Oct 28 – Nov 1, Sony invited roughly 40 photo and video journalists to attend their annual Digital Imaging Press Tour, which was held in Nashville, Tennessee. On the photographic agenda was a visit to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Lynchburg, TN, shooting a recording session at Ocean Way Studios, filming a Ben Folds concert at the historic Ryman Auditorium, off roading in Jeep Wrangers on mountain trails and hang gliding. The cameras included the new Alpha 7 and 7R and Cyber-shot RX10 hybrid stills/video cameras. For strictly video shooting, we had access to the Action Cam, Music Recorder and AX1 camcorders. For the entire week, I had access to the AX1 and shot 4K footage in various environments.
