Wenpod MD2 – The Perfect Gimbal Stabilizer?

wenpod md2Wenpod MD2 – The Perfect Gimbal Stabilizer?

I’ve researched camera stabilizers quite a bit lately, especially after the launch of the new DJI Osmo, when I came across the Wenpod MD2. This amazing 3-axis gimbal is also known by some as the Gazer MD2 Advanced 3-axis digital compact size camera / mini DSLR handheld gimbal stabilizer. Try saying that once really fast let alone three times. With all that title, what can one expect from the Wenpod MD2 in terms of stabilization, and why is it considered to be advanced? I have included an unfair comparison video that I found between the Wenpod MD2 and the DJI Ronin. I chose to include this video because visually, it’s quite amazing. However, there is no footage that accompanies this flamboyant demonstration. But I want you to keep an open mind on the subject, so watch the three videos and then tell me what you think.

Now I’m certainly not an engineer, but in reading a comment from Wenpod after being criticized for the flamboyant demonstration of the MD2s balancing ability, I came to one conclusion. The technology behind the MD2s operation is advanced if being different means to be more advanced. You be the judge. Here’s what he had to say:

This is a functional comparison only. Our final prototype of MD2 is entering a beta test with some upgrade and fine tune. For all stabilizer with PID control built-in, yes, you are correct. It is much better to place the camera at the bottom, because they are not capable of handling shakiness. We have abandoned PID controller with our own A.I. algorithm, which pro-actively cancelled the movement, not like PID. PID needs to wait for the sensor to detect imbalance and then act upon it passively. After the beta test is completed, footages will be posted. Thanks for your comment.

wenpod md2For me, it was love at first sight. The company has a strong case. The MD2 is manufactured in Mainland China, but just because it comes from a foreign shore doesn’t make this lady cheap. From what I have discovered, she is running in advanced company with a $2,000 price tag. The Wenpod MD2 seems to be rather rare in the States however, I’ll bet anything that it is because of the shipping costs to the US and that they are much more plentiful in Europe and the eastern part of the world. I’d sure like to get my hands on one. Let me know what you think.
